present number is bringing the University face to face with the urgent need for new buildings. The Ho Tung workshop is an admirable building; the electrical department and the materials laboratory and the drawing offices are adequate, but the power house and the old Government pumping station which has always housed the hydraulic machines and the prime movers are both quite inadequate. The old pumping station is a miserable tumble-down old building; it is already dangerously overcrowded, even for small demonstration classes. It will be practically impossible to conduct, either in this building or in the power house, effective demonstrations to larger classes. What is urgently needed is the construction on the ex-military land on the Pokfulum Road and near the Ho Tung workshop, of a building which will house all the prime-movers and all the machines now in the power house. The old pumping station should be de molished and on its site there should be erected a building which would house the hydraulics laboratory and a senior drawing office. Then the present drawing office could be thrown into the Library, the extension of which is also an urgent need.
